- Fabrizio Romano on Man Utd’s Manuel Ugarte

- Uruguayan midfielder endured difficult season
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United want to sell Manuel Ugarte this summer. The Uruguayan midfielder has endured a nightmare spell at Old Trafford.
Ugarte joined United from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024 in a £50m deal. Signed as a potential long-term Casemiro replacement, the 25-year-old has failed to live up to expectations.
With the summer transfer window opening on June 15th, the club are preparing for a midfield overhaul. That includes Casemiro’s departure when his contract expires at the end of next month.
Man Utd want to sell Ugarte
Romano has revealed that Ugarte is also headed for the exit door. The higher-ups are said to have informed the player’s camp that he will be sold this summer.
Ugarte’s future has been in doubt throughout the campaign, and he’s slipped down Michael Carrick’s pecking order. He put in a poor performance in a 2-1 loss to Leeds United in mid-April.
A back injury saw him miss a 0-0 draw against Sunderland two weeks ago but he remained on the bench in a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest last week. There’s every chance the former PSG star has now played his last game for the club.
Ugarte has made 22 league appearances this season, starting just eight of those games. He has three years left on his contract but there’s no word on how much United will be demanding for the Uruguay international.
A ‘difficult’ Old Trafford spell
Ugarte opened up on his struggles a week ago when he penned a message to fans on his Instagram account. He explained how tough the season has been:
“Season with many difficult moments, but always smiling. Thank you to my family who always supported me from afar and to you love who stood by my side on the toughest days.“
There had been much excitement over Ugarte’s acquisition, as many believed he possessed the ideal profile to become United’s permanent long-term holding midfielder. He didn’t quite hit the heights anticipated during his time at PSG.
Ugarte’s best spell came at Sporting CP under Ruben Amorim, where he caught the eye with consistent displays. Such was his importance in that team that the Ligue 1 giants swooped for his signature, beating Chelsea to the Uruguayan.
The magnitude of representing the Red Devils might be proving too much for him to handle. If you’re not up to standards, the fans and the media are onto you like a rash.
