- Senne Lammens enjoyed superb first season
- Man Utd paid £18m for Belgian goalkeeper
- Edwin van der Sar has given verdict
Legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has offered his honest verdict on Senne Lammens’ start to life at Old Trafford. Lammens was a late arrival last summer but helped guide United to an improved season after the woeful lows of 2024/25.
The 23-year-old arrived from Royal Antwerp in an £18million transfer and has already established himself among the Premier League’s best goalkeepers. He conceded 39 goals in 32 league appearances, kept eight clean sheets, and prevented more goals than any of his counterparts.
Lammens would be part of something special if he emulates Van der Sar, given the Dutchman lifted 11 trophies with United, including four Premier League titles and a Champions League. And the Old Trafford icon had his say on the Red Devils’ new goalkeeper ahead of his Soccer Aid appearance on Sunday.

Van der Sar hails Lammens
Van der Sar has been impressed by the start Lammens has made at his former club. He went so far as to back the young stopper to contribute to United’s return to challenging for the biggest trophies under Michael Carrick. He told TalkSPORT:
“I think nobody was surprised, but he did a tremendous job with the way he came in and conducted himself, claiming the crosses, with the saves that he made.
“He looks like a really good goalkeeper. He looks like a really good buy for the coming years to develop the team that Michael needs to challenge for honours.”
Man Utd’s signing of the season
After a decade of mismanaged finances and failed signings, United’s successful recruitment last summer fuelled an improved 2025/26 campaign.
An attacking rebuild was the primary focus, and Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha all entered double figures with their respective goal tallies.
But Lammens, who landed in Manchester after the season started, looks to be the finest recruit of the lot. In terms of value for money and his impact in what was a problem position, one could argue that there has not been a better new arrival in the Premier League.
Lammens’ calmness and composure, ability to command his area, and one-on-one shot-stopping bode well for the coming years. He offers a stable foundation on which Carrick can build his United team.
