Felix Nmecha Link Shows Man Utd Need A Midfield Plan Beyond Anderson

Manchester United’s reported interest in Felix Nmecha only makes sense if it sharpens the midfield plan, not if it becomes another expensive detour.

FootballTransfers reports that United have identified the Borussia Dortmund midfielder as a possible alternative to Elliot Anderson, citing Sky Sports Germany. The same report says Manchester City and Real Madrid are also in the picture, while Dortmund are relaxed because Nmecha signed a contract until 2030 earlier this year.

There is also a release-clause wrinkle. The reported €70million clause is not said to become active until the summer of 2027, meaning any move this year would likely require Dortmund to be convinced rather than simply triggered.

Anderson Context Makes The Nmecha Link Logical

United’s Anderson chase has been complicated for weeks. Manchester City have pushed hard, Nottingham Forest have held firm, and reports have suggested Anderson would prefer the blue side of Manchester if he leaves the City Ground.

ReadManUtd has already argued that United cannot allow that pursuit to dominate the whole rebuild, particularly after the story moved towards City territory. The background is worth revisiting in our piece on why Manchester United’s Elliot Anderson pursuit looked over.

Nmecha, at least on profile, explains the thinking. He is 25, has Bundesliga and Champions League experience, came through Manchester City’s academy, and has just put himself in the World Cup conversation with Germany. That combination will always catch attention at Old Trafford, especially in a summer where Carrick needs athleticism, legs and a bit more carrying power in central areas.

Dortmund Will Not Be Easy To Move

The difficulty is Dortmund. They are rarely sentimental sellers, and a contract running to 2030 puts them in a position of strength. United supporters know this road. A player can be admired, watched and discussed for months, but unless the selling club is ready to open the door, admiration does not move the dial.

The reported 2027 release clause matters because it creates a clear question for United. Are they prepared to pay over the odds now for a player who may be more accessible next year? Or is the Nmecha link really a sign that the club are building pressure elsewhere, keeping alternatives alive while they work on more immediate midfield business?

That is where the Anderson comparison becomes useful. United have already seen what happens when a target becomes entangled in a rival’s bigger financial push. Our recent look at how United believed they could beat City to Anderson shows how quickly the ground can shift once the numbers climb.

Carrick Needs The Right Type, Not Just A Big Name

Carrick’s rebuild should not be judged by how many midfielders United are linked with. It should be judged by whether the pieces fit. Ederson, expected to arrive from Atalanta, would give the side a more durable base. Mateus Fernandes has been framed as a younger, progressive option. Nmecha would bring a different kind of physical and technical balance.

The temptation, after years of United windows that felt half reactive and half theatrical, is to chase the next name as soon as a door closes. Carrick needs better than that. He needs a midfield built with roles in mind, not a collection of good players who all made sense in isolation.

That is why the Ederson context remains important, and why our piece on how Ederson gives the midfield rebuild its first solid line still feels central to this summer.

Nmecha is a credible football idea. He is also an expensive one, wrapped in competition and Dortmund control. If United are serious, they need to know exactly what job he is being signed to do. The shirt is heavy enough without buying uncertainty to wear it.
