Manchester United have joined the developing race for Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey, with the Dutch striker’s World Cup form now threatening to turn a sensible attacking shortlist into a far more expensive summer chase.
According to TEAMtalk, United are among the clubs showing strong interest in Brobbey, while Tottenham and Atletico Madrid are also monitoring the 24-year-old. The interest comes after a debut Premier League season at Sunderland and a sharper international profile with the Netherlands.
Carrick Faces Brobbey Transfer Battle
Brobbey only joined Sunderland from Ajax on 1 September 2025, with Ajax confirming the deal was worth €20 million plus a possible €5 million in add-ons. That fee now looks like the floor, not the ceiling, if Sunderland decide to entertain offers.
The pursuit also lands while United are juggling wider midfield-market pressure around Mateus Fernandes, a reminder that Carrick’s recruitment list can be squeezed quickly when Premier League rivals move early.
For Carrick, the appeal is obvious. United need a forward who can occupy centre-backs, protect possession with his back to goal and give their wide players a fixed reference point in the box. Brobbey is not the cleanest glamour-market name, but his profile fits a squad that already has runners and needs more penalty-area force.
The risk is timing. Sunderland have no footballing reason to sell cheaply after building around Brobbey, while rival interest gives them leverage. United may like the player; the harder question is whether they are prepared to turn admiration into a serious bid before the market moves away from them.
