Eva Olid wants Phallon Tullis-Joyce to keep producing performances like the one that helped Manchester United Women beat Liverpool 1-0 on Saturday.
The goalkeeper played a major role in Manchester United securing their first clean sheet of the season, making eight saves during the game. According to Opta, as confirmed by the Man Utd official site as well, that was the most saves by a United goalkeeper in a WSL match.
Her biggest moment came in the first half when she produced a superb double save, recovering quickly after stopping the initial effort to deny the follow-up as well.
Eva Olid has been pushing Tullis-Joyce to become more vocal and commanding behind the defence.
Eva Olid wants Tullis-Joyce to become a leader
“I speak a lot with Phallon to try to give her that confidence,” Olid said after the game.
The United boss believes the goalkeeper has an important role beyond simply making saves.
“You have to be a leader,” Olid told her. “The goalkeepers see everything and then you need to step up and be a leader and show a lot of security to the team.”
Tullis-Joyce is a naturally quiet personality, but Olid wants that to change when she steps onto the pitch.
“She’s a quiet person, but I say, ‘On the pitch, you need to show [it] because you are so important.’”
United’s only goal came through Julia Zigiotti after a high press forced Liverpool goalkeeper Khiara Keating into a poor pass.
Olid felt United could have scored more, though, and wants greater composure in the final third.
“We have to be better in final-third situations,” she said, stressing that better decisions and a calmer approach could lead to more goals.
