Michael Carrick reacts to Man Utd boos after Tottenham draw

Michael Carrick admitted Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur was a painful result, after his side failed to protect the lead against 10-man Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Manchester United looked set to claim three points when Bryan Mbeumo scored in the second half off Cunha’s low cross, but Dominic Solanke’s late equaliser in injury time left Carrick facing more questions on United’s performance and his future.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, the United manager felt his players improved after the break but failed to handle the situation when victory was within reach.

Carrick addresses Man Utd’s late collapse

“It was a mixed game. We found it tough to start with. For a number of reasons, we were not quite there. You could see it was a challenging time,” Carrick said.

“But the lads grew into the game, in the second half I thought we were better in everything. To get the game as we wanted it, in such a good position – we should see it through. We have to manage those situations.”

United have now conceded two late goals that have cost them valuable points, something Carrick believes has made their position look worse than it might have otherwise.

Asked whether a lack of confidence had contributed to United’s slow start, he disagreed but admitted matches can quickly slip away from his side.

The boos at half-time and full-time also clearly affected him.

“It’s not nice, it hurts a lot because I care about this club. But I understand the disappointment, the reality is what it is, we need to get back to winning games.”
