The Glazers took control of Manchester United in 2005. That takeover has since caused so many disruptions and protests by the fans over massive debts and insufficient backing of the team in the transfer market, despite successful periods in the Premier League and Europe.
Now Manchester United need to think about who should control the club in the future. Laurie Whitwell has now shared his views on why Manchester United need an ownership change. He simply wants the Glazers gone from Old Trafford. However, he also recognizes that replacing the current ownership doesn’t automatically mean things will improve for United.
The journalist believes the change in ownership has had a lasting effect on United, with the club still feeling its consequences today. A fresh start might be welcome, but the identity of the next owners would matter just as much as the departure of the existing ones.
Whitwell explains the Man Utd ownership dilemma
“Personally, I would like to see the Glazers gone from Manchester United,” Laurie Whitwell said on The Rest is Football podcast with Gary Lineker.
“That change, you know, just really affected and still impacts United now.”
The desire for different ownership is one thing, but finding people capable of taking the club forward is another.
Whitwell admitted there is no perfect answer when it comes to who should take charge.
“There’s no ideal owner.”
That leaves United facing a difficult choice. A sale could offer the chance to change how the club is run, but simply bringing in a new owner would not guarantee better decisions or a brighter future.
Could Manchester United fans have a role?
Whitwell also raised the idea of United supporters having a greater say in the club’s ownership and decisions, much like the Barcelona model where fans own the club itself. However, he highlighted that the Barcelona model isn’t ideal either and has its own shortcomings.
Changing the names at the top would only be one part of the change. The club would also need an ownership structure capable of making sound decisions and providing a direction.
The issue of ownership goes beyond whether the Glazers should stay or leave. Manchester United needs to find the right people and the right model to secure the club’s future. Getting that decision wrong could leave them facing the same circus the fans are enduring under the Glazers.
