Senne Lammens believes Manchester United must learn to finish games off after their late collapse against Tottenham Hotspur.
The result left the goalkeeper frustrated at Old Trafford despite leading the game and with a player more on the field.
Manchester United looked set for three points after Bryan Mbeumo put them ahead in the second half, but Dominic Solanke’s stoppage-time equaliser denied Michael Carrick’s side a much-needed victory.
Speaking to MUTV, Senne Lammens admitted the team had struggled early on but had done enough after the break to put themselves in a winning position.
“Football can be a bit cruel at times,” the Belgian goalkeeper said. “There are a lot of ups and downs, especially in a game like that.”
Senne Lammens explains where Man Utd went wrong
Senne Lammens felt United failed to take advantage of Tottenham’s red card, allowing the visitors too much space to find a late equaliser.
“We’ve won a lot of games against 10 men [in the past], but you also know there can be a tricky situation when you’re playing against 10 men, because they have nothing to lose and they know that.”
He added that United should have scored again to put the result beyond doubt or, at the very least, prevented Tottenham from creating further chances.
“I think that’s what we did wrong. We gave them a little bit too much breathing room to create those chances, and then one ball has to go right for them, one bounce has to go their way, and they can score like that.”
United must learn to see out games
The goalkeeper also pointed to similarities with United’s earlier disappointment against Everton, where points slipped away late in the match.
“You feel like those games just slip away from you, and there are one or two situations where you don’t really have control,” he said.
“I think there’s a lot to learn from today. It wasn’t all negative, not at all, but especially the way it ended left a very bad feeling.”
“I think the easy answer is that we have to be able to kill the game faster and not put ourselves in that position to give them a chance.”
Despite the frustration, Lammens said there were positives to take from the performance. However, the late goal had left a bitter feeling, and United now need to turn those lessons into better results.
