Michael Carrick doubtful for Everton trip

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is a serious doubt for their trip to Everton Sunday, having been on the sidelines with injury during recent weeks.

The 33-year-old has been a commanding figure in the Red Devils’ set-up for many seasons, but has enjoyed his development under summer arrival Louis van Gaal even more.

The central midfielder has been imperative to victories over Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Manchester City – but regrettably limped off the field in the final few minutes of the latter fixture, leaving the hosts to feature with ten men for the closing stages.

Carrick also sat out of United’s recent 1-0 defeat at the hands of league leaders Chelsea on Saturday, and is now expected to sit out of a trip to Goodison Park on Sunday, when facing Everton.

Manchester United were without the availability of both Carrick and Daley Blind – the club’s two predominant holding midfielders – which forced captain Wayne Rooney back to a midfield role. Many supporters have suggested the Reds could have walked away from Stamford Bridge victorious if Carrick was available, but they are likely to also miss the Englishman’s service at the weekend.

Nevertheless, Dutchman Blind is expected to return for the tie, meaning Rooney will be available to return to a lone striker role, where he as clearly impressed most this season.
