Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney may have to sit out the remainder of the Red Devils’ campaign, after limping off in the final minutes at Goodison Park on Sunday.
The England international has been one of the Reds’ most pivotal players throughout the season, and looks set to finish as the club’s top scorer despite regular appearances as a holding midfielder.
However, in a team recently plagued with injury following their 4-2 victory against Manchester City – which saw Michael Carrick limp off the field in similar fashion – Rooney could become the latest name to join the injury list.
The 29-year-old will face further tests in order to determine the extent of his injury, but it is believed within the United set-up that his season may have ended prematurely.
The possibility of damage to knee ligaments, although not deemed too seriously, could rule the skipper out for up to a month. As a result, this would pose no threat to United’s pre-season and 2015/16 campaign, but he could miss the final few matches.
Louis van Gaal’s side are now facing a push to ensure top four and European qualification, wit four games remaining in the concluding three weeks.
West Bromwich Albion and Arsenal are still yet to visit the Theatre of Dreams, while van Gaal will also face a trip to Selhurst Park to play Crystal Palace in between. The season will then be completed against former player Steve Bruce and his Hull City side, who face a relegation scrap.
As a result, Robin van Persie may return to the first-team set-up after impressing for the reserves, while Radamel Falcao will also be wanting to make his mark in the hope of a permanent transfer in the summer from AS Monaco.
Wayne Rooney has scored 12 goals in 30 league appearances this season.
