United linked to £45 million Premier League striker

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is looking into the availability of Tottenham Hotspur’s tantalising striker Harry Kane, according to journalists Matt Lawton and Mike Keegan.

The Dutchman has already recruited the services of fellow countryman Memphis Depay, but is expected to make a number of signings in the summer in preparation for his side’s return to European football.

It is reported the 63-year-old manager has identified a number of potential signings after his first season in charge, and a right-back, central defender, central midfielder and striker are all expected to be poached by van Gaal in the coming months.

Kane has now become the latest name to be linked with a switch to the Theatre of Dreams, having recently become the first striker to net 30 goals in a season for Tottenham Hotspur since Gary Lineker. However, the 21-year-old put pen-to-paper on a five-and-a-half-year contract just three months ago, and Tottenham are expected to demand a fee in excess of £45 million for his services.

Previous reports suggested the Englishman, who netted minutes into his international debut, could join former White Hart Lane favourite Gareth Bale at Real Madrid. Nonetheless, both could also head to the Theatre of Dreams, with Bale out of favour in the Spanish capital – while his family and girlfriend have reportedly moved back to England ahead of a proposed move.

Alternative options for van Gaal sees Burnley forward Danny Ings available for just £5 million with his contract expiring next month, but Liverpool are now firm favourites to sign the in-form striker. Both Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao faced lacklustre spells throughout the season, with van Persie beginning to age and Falcao expected to return to Monaco after an insignificant loan spell.

Under the reign of Sir Alex Ferguson, Michael Carrick, Teddy Sheringham and Dimitar Berbatov all joined the Manchester club from Tottenham Hotspur, the latter seeing United spend £30 million for the Bulgarian front man.

However, with up to £150 million available for van Gaal this season, he may recruit a number of new stars in an attempt to clinch the Premier League from the clutches of Jose Mourinho.
