Since the departure of Brian McClair, Manchester United didn’t appear to be in any rush to appoint a new head coach. However, the latest reports reveal that Nicky Butt is at the top of the list when it comes to potential suitors.
Ed Woodward is believed to be working with secretary John Alexander and John Murtough to improve the Academy set up at United – because it is believed that it has become dry in the sense that there isn’t a lot being created.
If Butt were to get the job, he will start at the start of next season and would report directly to Louis van Gaal. After all, the Dutchman has a proven track record when bringing through younger talents.
Butt has been in charge of the academy on an interim basis since March, and it is believed he’d quite like to take the role on a permanent basis. The 40-year-old is expected to be the leading candidate, after McClair held the role since 2006.
Nicky Butt is often remembered for being a member of Sir Alex Ferguson’s infamous ‘Class of 92’.
