Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney has issued a statement of intent to the Red Devil’s Premier League rivals, declaring “I honestly believe we will go far next year”.
The club’s talisman expects major improvement on the team’s 4th-placed finish of the season just gone and insists that Manchester United “won’t be far off challenging for the league”. The most successful team in the league’s history made the jump from 7th to 4th after a shocking Premier League season under David Moyes in 2013/14, by appointing Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal as their new manager.
United were hampered in the summer transfer window last year by Louis van Gaal’s involvement in the World Cup in Brazil, where Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and others were also present. His inability to arrive in Manchester before July meant that his preparations for the upcoming season were shortened – not ideal in a new league and environment.
This summer, United won’t have that worry as Louis van Gaal was probably preparing for 2015/16 before 2014/15 had even reached its conclusion. The signing of the promising Dutch winger Memphis Depay from PSV has already taken place as van Gaal looks to get all of his transfer business finished before the club’s pre-season tour of the United States in July, when the Red Devils will face the likes of Barcelona and Paris Saint Germain in the lead up to playing Tottenham Hotspur in their first match of the new Premier League season.
As well as a favourable run of opening league fixtures, United also have a Champions League qualification round to look forward to in August, with the opponents not yet confirmed. Winning the two-legged tie which is sandwiched between two Premier League games will see United return to the group stages of the Champions League after one season of absence.
