During Louis van Gaal’s press conference earlier this morning, the Dutchman confirmed that De Gea won’t start for United.
“David shall not play so I don’t have any concerns [about him not being ready]. I think about the human being more than the player and I don’t think he can handle that.”
De Gea has been linked with a move to Real Madrid all summer long, as his contract ends in a year’s time, potentially allowing one of the best goalkeepers in the world to leave on a free transfer. It has been rumoured that United would only accept a bid in the region of £30 million or Sergio Ramos in a swap deal for the 24-year-old goalkeeper.
It is also expected that Ajax’s Jasper Cillessen would be De Gea’s replacement if he departs before the end of the summer transfer window. The 26-year-old would be able to play in the Champions League for United after Ajax’s elimination from the third-round qualifiers.
It’s very unlikely that Victor Valdes will get a look in as he’s been made surplus to requirements, as van Gaal claimed he “refused to play in the reserves and doesn’t follow his philosophy”.
With Anders Lindegaard falling down the pecking order, it’s likely that Sergio Romero or Sam Johnstone will make their competitive debut for United. 22-year-old Johnstone put in some impressive performances for United during their pre-season fixtures, whilst Romero only signed for the club nearly two weeks ago.
