Manchester United face Newcastle United at Old Trafford at 12:45pm (BST) on Saturday afternoon. Louis van Gaal gave his pre-match press conference early on Friday morning; the Dutch manager gave us an insight into who we could see facing off against the Magpies…
In a wonderful contrast to the story of last season, there are no fresh injury concerns within the squad – meaning that Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are the only players who are unable to feature as the first continues his recovery from mild thrombosis and the latter pushes for a return to full match fitness following a busy summer on international duty. van Gaal:
“Only Jones, who is still ill [is absent]. But he’s getting better and has done some running.” The boss was also asked about Bastian Schweinsteiger and whether the first German to make a senior appearance for the club will get into the starting XI any time soon. The World Cup and Champions League winner has impressed in all three substitute appearances so far and will be wanting to get involved from the start soon.
van Gaal’s answer was that “maybe tomorrow” Bastian will start – so was he just quoting his favourite Stereophonics song, or will ‘Basti’ line up against the Newcastle on Saturday?
If Schweinsteiger does get the nod, we can expect the starting eleven to be like so:
