Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur return from the international break with plenty to prove when they meet at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Michael Carrick’s side have won just once in their last four domestic matches since beating Ipswich 5-2. A Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton was followed by a loss to 10-man Manchester City, before United drew with Everton and Fulham. Matheus Cunha’s late equaliser at Fulham rescued a point, but Manchester United still sit 12th.
Tottenham have had an even worse start. Roberto De Zerbi’s side are bottom of the Premier League with only two points from their opening five games. Spurs have failed to score in four of those matches, while defeats against Aston Villa and Newcastle have added to the pressure.
The visitors have also lost their Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool, while their two league points came from goalless draws with Everton and Nottingham Forest.
Manchester United vs Tottenham team news
Carrick faces a long injury list. Amad Diallo, Matthijs de Ligt, Tom Heaton and Manuel Ugarte are long-term absentees. Concerns over Karl Darlow, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Benjamin Sesko surfaced before the international break. All missed international duty and remain doubtful for the Saturday clash.
Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui are also concerns after picking up injuries during the international break. Michael Carrick is expected to update on the injuries during his pre-match press conference.
Injuries leave United particularly short in several areas. However, there is good news elsewhere. Carlos Baleba is one positive, having returned to action in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Lausanne-Sport after his ankle problem. After sitting on the bench against Fulham, he is expected to make his debut against Tottenham.
Tottenham will also be without several players. Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Mykhailo Mudryk, Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski are ruled out, while Jan Paul van Hecke is a doubt with an ankle problem.
Stuart Attwell will referee the match, with Constantine Hatzidakis and Nick Hopton as his assistants. Jarred Gillett will oversee VAR.
Recent form and head-to-head
United’s recent Premier League form reads L-W-D-L-D, while Tottenham come into the game with L-L-D-D-L.
The recent head-to-head record gives Spurs some encouragement. Tottenham have won four of the last six meetings. However, United won the most recent encounter, beating Spurs 2-0 at Old Trafford in February 2026.
Across the last five meetings, Tottenham have won twice, United once, with one draw also recorded.
The bigger issue for both teams is their current standings in the Premier League table. United are 12th and need a convincing home performance to ease the pressure surrounding Michael Carrick. Tottenham are bottom of the league and desperately need their attack to start producing.
