Manchester United will face Newcastle United in their third Premier League game of the season on Saturday, with Louis van Gaal’s side looking for their fourth consecutive victory in all competitions.
The two teams often provide an entertaining game when up against each other and Newcastle have scored in all of their last five visits to Old Trafford. Games between the two have been especially competitive in
Manchester in recent times, so there could be another interesting game in store.
Here, we look at the last five meetings between the two sides:
Newcastle United 0-1 Manchester United, March 2015
As this game looked to be heading for a goalless draw, United somehow emerged from St. James’ Park with a win, despite rarely troubling the opposition.

United were even fortunate not to concede a penalty early on, as Chris Smalling made a reckless challenge on Newcastle’s Emmanuel Riviere. A spitting incident between Papiss Cisse and Jonny Evans then overshadowed the remainder of a first half devoid of chances.
A similarly uninspiring second half followed, until Ashley Young capitalised on a mistake from Magpies ‘keeper Tim Krul in the 89th minute. The Newcastle goalkeeper received a back pass but played it straight to the United winger, who duly finished to earn an important win.
Manchester United 3-1 Newcastle United, December 2014
Louis van Gaal’s first taste of action against the Magpies wasn’t particularly difficult, as United cruised to victory against a Newcastle side that rarely threatened.
United controlled the game throughout and took the lead early on, as Wayne Rooney tapped into an empty net after Radamel Falcao slid the ball back across goal from a cross. A second goal for the captain followed, who then assisted Robin van Persie in the second half to put the home side 3-0 up.

Newcastle scored a consolation goal from the penalty spotjust minutes from time, but that did little other than take some of the shine off of United’s victory.
Newcastle United 0-4 Manchester United, April 2014
This proved to be United’s biggest win at St. James’ Park for over six years, though there was something of an end of season feel to it. Newcastle were all but safe from relegation, whilst United were increasingly unlikely to qualify for the Champions League.
United didn’t disappoint though and took the lead through a Juan Mata free-kick, which was then followed by the Spaniard’s second plus goals from Javier Hernandez and Adnan Januzaj in the second half.
Despite the margin of victory in this game, the little importance attached to the win has made this game quite forgettable.

Manchester United 0-1 Newcastle United, December 2013
This loss was one of many broken records in David Moyes’ only season as United boss, as Newcastle won at Old Trafford for the first time in over 40 years.
The game was unconventional of meetings between the two teams, with an uninspiring first half followed by a second half that offered little more. Patrice Evra hit the post with a header for United, but there weren’t many other chances in the match.
With United looking to find a breakthrough, Newcastle scored the winning goal on the counter attack just after the hour. The ball was cut back to Yohan Cabaye, who duly finished low into the corner to win the game for
Magpies. A game to forget for the Reds.
Manchester United 4-3 Newcastle United, December 2012

In what proved to be Sir Alex Ferguson’s final game in charge against the Magpies, United triumphed in a manner truly befitting of their legendary boss.
Typically of their 2012/13 campaign, United conceded first in this match. James Perch scored from close range after just four minutes when David de Gea parried a shot in front of goal, before a pair of Jonny Evans
goals, one in the opposition’s net and the other in his own, left the Magpies 2-1 up at half time.
Patrice Evra equalised with a low effort after half-time, but Newcastle re-took the lead once again with just over 20 minutes to go. Papiss Cisse tucked home a low cross in front of the Stretford End, but Robin van Persie then equalised just minutes later and the momentum was with United for the closing stages.
The winner looked as though it would never come, until Michael Carrick played an inviting through ball over the top of the defence, with Javier Hernandez waiting. The Mexican applied the desired finish on the half volley in the 90th minute, with the strike enough to earn United the victory.
