Carrick withdraws from England squad

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the England squad to face Switzerland.

The 34-year-old was expected to start for Roy Hodgson’s side at Wembley for their UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier on Tuesday night

Carrick has earned 33 international caps but has failed to become a regular starter for England with the midfielder facing fierce competition for a role in the heart of the midfield for some time.

According to reports from the Daily Star, the midfielder could also miss Saturday evening’s clash with rivals Liverpool.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will likely turn to German star Bastian Schweinsteiger, or Marouane Fellaini could be a contender to replace Carrick.

The 34-year-old is yet to miss a game for United this season, despite having injury issues last season as he featured just 18 times in the Premier League.

The Old Trafford faithful will be hoping that the injury picked up by the midfielder isn’t a recurrence of the calf injury that plagued Carrick for much of last season.
