Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has signed a contract extension at Old Trafford to keep him at the club past June 2016, when his other one was set to expire.
The Spanish international was very close to a deadline day switch to Real Madrid, but the deal fell through due to paperwork not being submitted to La Liga on time. Keylor Navas would have been involved in the deal.
The extension is until June 2019, with an option for a further year to be added. David de Gea has played 175 games for the Red Devils and will be hoping that his new contract means he can displace Sergio Romero in goal for the remainder of this season. The Argentinian international has started every game so far this campaign with van Gaal insisting that de Gea wouldn’t play until his future was resolved.
The Spaniard had this to say about his new deal:
“I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career. I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans. Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career. I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and concentrating on working hard to improve and help my teammates to be successful.”
His manager is just as pleased:
“I am absolutely delighted David has signed a new contract. He is one of the best goalkeepers in world football. I am very pleased that he will be part of the team for many years to come. David made a very important contribution to our performance last season and he has been the club’s Player of the Year for the last two seasons. He is a popular player who is keen to learn and enhance his game. At such a young age for a goalkeeper, he has many years ahead of him.”
I’m sure United fans everywhere are delighted too! Tweet us your thoughts on the new contract to @ReadManUtd!
