Jamie Redknapp believes Manchester United’s Anthony Martial is the best young footballer he’s seen since Lionel Messi burst onto the scene.
The 19-year old French striker has got off to a flying start since joining the Reds in a deal worth a potential £58 million from Monaco on transfer deadline day, scoring four goals in five matches for Louis van Gaal’s men.
And the former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder told Sky Sports that the only player that was playing at such a high standard at Martial’s age was Barcelona’s Argentinian wizard.
He said: “I watched Anthony Martial for 90 minutes in the Champions League and the only 19-year-old I’ve seen better at that age was Lionel Messi.”
I played against Wayne Rooney when he made his debut but this boy has so much intelligence. He knows when to pass, when to cross it, when to dribble and when to shoot. He goes past people like they’re not there.
“Everything he does, there is a reason behind it. It’s like he’s been here before – certain players have this, you can’t put your finger on what it is, but it’s just a quality. I love watching him play. He’s going to be a superstar.”
Martial has certainly enjoyed a fantastic start to life at Old Trafford and has quickly become a fan favourite among United fans. Even when he hasn’t been scoring goals, he has been impressing with his off the ball movement and composure in big match situations.
However, there may come a time where Martial hits a rough patch, and United fans will have to be patient with the young Frenchman. But if things continue as they are, there’s no doubt that Martial will be a world class striker.
