van Gaal: “Draw will be positive result”

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has stated that a draw against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League tomorrow night will be a good result for the Reds.

With all four teams in Group B on three points after two games, tomorrow’s clash takes on extra significance and a win will put United well on their way towards qualification for the knockout stage.

In his pre-match press conference at the Arena Khimki, van Gaal said: “I said before the away match against PSV Eindhoven, one point is good. Three points is better but one point is good.”

The United manager also insists that he is not thinking about Sunday’s Manchester Derby against City just yet. That game is crucial, with a win potentially allowing the Reds to rise to the top of the Premier League table.

“For me, as a manager, the next match is the most important match,” he said. “I don’t think about Man City.

I only think about CSKA Moscow and I have to focus on this match. I demand that also from my players. We have already lost one game against PSV away and we want to gain one point at least. That is why it is a very important match for us.

van Gaal also explained the decision to train in Manchester before flying out to Moscow, instead of training at the Arena Khimki tonight. “We trained in Manchester today because of the logistics and the way we have to prepare for matches,” the Dutchman said.

He added: “We were told that there would be traffic jams in Moscow so we thought it would be better to train at home on our training ground. My preference is to train here, because then the players know the circumstances and where they have to play, but in this case we decided to train in Manchester.”
