Following the 0-0 draw in the highly-anticipated Manchester derby, Man United boss Louis van Gaal said that he is ‘sick’ of questions about the form of Wayne Rooney, as he came under yet more scrutiny after the game.
It’s clear that the Dutch manager doesn’t like the split in attention between Rooney and the manager himself. But, to be fair, it was a disappointing afternoon for the English striker, who failed to create an impact on the game.
Sir, I have to talk every week about Rooney. I don’t give any more about Wayne Rooney because I am sick of it.
Speaking in the post-match press conference, van Gaal was adamant that his side should have had a penalty for a tackle on Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera by English winger Raheem Sterling.
I have seen on the video that Herrera was a penalty. A penalty. But the referee was not giving us the benefit. I can see it clearly on the video that he [Sterling] does not touch the ball but the legs of Herrera. But that luck we don’t have this season. I can imagine it is very difficult for the referee… It is like that. It is not the first time that I had it like that way.

Countering that, Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini stated that if it’s a penalty on Herrera, then the foul from Rooney on Otamendi should also have been given as a spot kick. He also spoke about the style of play his side used in the game.
I read a lot in the media about teams playing tactical games or mind games and coming for a draw: for me, it’s not the way to do it. But if you do do it you must do it well and we did it well. It’s not our normal way to do it but we can do it.
Manchester United will be hoping to return to winning ways in the Capital One Cup when they play Championship side Middlesbrough.
