Solskjaer: “Rooney one of the best to play for United”

Former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says that Wayne Rooney will be remembered as one of the greatest players to ever play for United and England after his retirement.

Rooney scored his 237th goal for the Reds during United’s 1-0 Champions League victory over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday to become United’s second highest goalscorer alongside Denis Law, while in September he overtook Sir Bobby Charlton as England’s all-time record goalscorer, scoring a penalty in the Three Lions’ 2-0 victory over Switzerland.

And the Molde manager says that the 30 year-old has already achieved legend status at Old Trafford and joked that his injuries played a vital role in the striker’s move from Everton, according to Sky Sports:

Wayne’s a legend at the club, he’s been fantastic since he arrived. He might thank me for getting that injury as we needed strikers back then when I got injured, so we signed him.

But he’s been a top, top team-mate of mine, he’s a great lad and I wish him all the best. Wazza will go in the history books as one of the best players to have ever played for Manchester United and England.

You know when you’ve got Wayne Rooney, wherever you put him, you’ll get a top, top performance. You could even put him in goal.

Solskjaer was also asked about Louis van Gaal’s tactics, which have been criticised recently by some former United players. However, he did not wade into the debate, only saying this:

Of course, Man Utd has always been an entertaining, attacking team to watch and I’ve been part of it and really enjoyed playing for them in that style.
