Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney may be about to enter the final stages of his footballing career, but after retirement he could find himself a gig in the WWE, judging by last night’s actions.
The WWE were in Manchester last night as part of their European tour, taping their flagship show Monday Night Raw, and the United captain was in attendance with his son Klay and former team-mates Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs.
It was a surprise for many fans in attendance to see Rooney in the front row, and the 30-year old eventually got involved in one of the matchups, slapping fellow Brit (and Preston North End fan) Wade Barrett in the face, prompting chants of ‘Rooney, Rooney’ to ring around the Manchester Arena.
King @WadeBarrett and @WWESheamus just got SERVED by @WWECesaro and @ManUtd‘s @WayneRooney! #WWETitle #RAW https://t.co/ppwjG6qedR

This came after Barrett mouthed off at the United and England captain while accompanying fellow wrestler Sheamus at ringside:
In this ring are two men who can be easily be described as championship material. Which is, of course, more than can be said of Wayne Rooney and Manchester United.
I’d love for you to step into the ring and face me, but I wouldn’t want your son to see his father as a complete failure. Especially when he has to see that every time you step onto a football field.
Rooney’s slap caused a distraction leading to Swiss wrestler Cesaro beating Sheamus and Barrett threatened to confront Rooney at Old Trafford this morning:
I’m heading to Old Trafford early tomorrow morning. I hope @WayneRooney has the guts to meet me there. @ManUtd @WWE https://t.co/AkYs7LedXK

I sincerely hope Wade realises it’s the international break, as this fan helpfully points out:
@WadeBarrett @WayneRooney @ManUtd @WWE For what mate? Heading to OT on a Tuesday morning in the International break, you mad?
