Carrick set for long spell on sidelines

Manchester United midfielder could be set for an extended spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury during England’s defeat against Spain in Alicante last night.

The 34-year-old was set to play the full 90 minutes for the Three Lions against the reigning European champions but was stretched off in injury time after seemingly twisting his ankle.

Speaking after the 2-0 defeat, England manager Roy Hodgson did nothing to allay United’s fears, stating:

Michael Carrick doesn’t look good. He’s got a severely twisted ankle which normally means ligament damage. We won’t know that of course until he’s had an X-ray or a scan tomorrow, but it doesn’t look good.

The midfielder is expected to fly back to Manchester today and have scans on his injured ankle, but it does not seem that Louis van Gaal will receive good news, and the Dutchman will be deprived of a key player.

Carrick has been an important part of United’s side this season, featuring in 13 of the Reds’ 20 games so far this season, as well as starting 10 of those games. This injury might leave the midfield a little bit thin, with Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera being able to play in the middle of the park.
