Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata says the side will “give everything on the pitch” to turn recent draws into victories, starting with the crucial Champions League clash against Wolfsburg tomorrow.
Anything but a victory will put the Reds in danger of exiting the Champions League at the group stage and the Spaniard is aware of how difficult it is to play German teams on their home turf.
However, the 27-year-old believes that United can get the job done at the Volkswagen Arena and a victory will provide a huge boost in confidence ahead of the busy run of festive fixtures.
In his latest blog, Mata writes:
As you know, this Tuesday we have a really important game. We play in Germany against Wolfsburg and it’s likely that we’ll need to win in order to reach the next stage. We all know how tough it is to play against German teams at their stadiums, it’s a big challenge, but we believe that we can get our ticket to the next round of the Champions League there, and also a boost of confidence for this busy month of December.
Mata also reflected on United’s goalless draw against West Ham at the weekend, their fifth in the last nine games, where the Reds failed to find the back of the net despite multiple chances:
Last Saturday’s game against West Ham came to show how difficult it is to get the three points if you don’t take your chances, especially the first few opportunities that you have (obviously, your confidence increases if you score first). It’s fair to say that they had chances to take the lead, but thanks to David and the posts we ended up with a clean sheet, which is one of the positive conclusions that we can take from this game and from the season in general.
We are aware that we must improve our game and how we finalise our plays (the most important thing), and that’s what we are working for at the training complex every single day.
