Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says tomorrow’s do-or-die Champions League clash against Wolfsburg is the most important match in his time at United so far.
Anything but a victory at the Volkswagen Arena will put United in danger of exiting Europe’s premier club competition at the initial hurdle and heap immense pressure on the Dutchman after unconvincing results recently.
In the pre-match press conference, he said:
The moment is always the most important thing in this question as we have to fight against Manchester City in the league, or against Liverpool, and for the fans they are very important.
But in this moment, I believe this is the most important match but only at this moment. It’s also very important for the club to continue in the Champions League and also for the players because they want to show their qualities at the highest podium. That’s also why it is very important.
van Gaal also said he was satisfied with his team’s performances so far this season:
Yes, I am pleased. When I have to consider our season then I can only say that the match against Arsenal and against Palace we were not the better team. Normally, we create more chances than our opponents but you have to finish.
As a manager, you cannot be pleased when it’s like that. You have to score. But when you ask me about the performance as a team then mostly I can say I am satisfied.
Bastian Schweinsteiger was alongside the manager at the press conference and said the team is not feeling any pressure ahead of tomorrow’s crucial clash:
There is no big pressure. We are here in Wolfsburg and know the situation – we need a good result and just have to think about our performance of how we beat Wolfsburg.
We did it in Manchester and we want to do it again. We have to prove ourselves. I’m convinced we’ll make a good game tomorrow evening.
