Van Gaal – Players must be more ‘horny’

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has bizarrely used the word ‘horny’ to demand more passion from his players ahead of the second leg of their Europa League tie against Midtjylland.

The Red Devils are a goal down heading into the second leg at Old Trafford following a poor performance in Denmark last week, but a single goal victory for United tomorrow night will send them into the round of 16 on away goals.

In his pre-match press conference, van Gaal was asked whether his side needed to up their levels of desire to turn around the 2-1 deficit in the round of 32 tie and according to the Guardian, he said:

Desire…it is a great word. I often use the word ‘horny’ with my players.

The United manager’s words threw up laughter from the journalists in attendance at the press conference, and will certainly be another entry into the Dutchman’s most unconventional press conferences.

However, on a more serious note, van Gaal praised the Danish side for their approach and tactics heading into the second leg:

I think Midtjylland has a very good organisation, very detailed … they play with diagonal pressing. I do that also with my team. Not many teams are doing that. And when I see the data of Midtjylland they have always won against English opponents.

We have to keep the ball better and we have to move the ball quicker – that’s always what we have to do.
