Hodgson refuses to rule out Euro chance for Rashford

Marcus Rashford has already started to make a name for himself, scoring four goals in his first two games, and putting in another stellar performance against Watford.

The 18-year-old has made two caps for England’s under-18s and Roy Hodgson is “thrilled” to see the youngster getting game time at United.

The England manager has friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands coming up and has said that he will experiment with the squad.

Speaking at a Euro 2016 coaches’ briefing on Thursday Hodgson said:

I would neither rule him in or rule him out, I just hope he can do well.

We are delighted that a player playing for our under-18s, players who we believe in and who we think have got a bright future, are getting chances in the first team.

However, like many others, Hodgson is hoping that Rashford isn’t put under too much pressure:

I hope he has a good end to the season. Most of all, I hope he is allowed to develop as an 18-year-old should and people don’t try to put him under enormous pressure. Let’s hope the lad at 18 years of age gets a chance to develop in the same way as Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley, Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Paul Scholes – you can name as many as you like.

Hodgson was also quick to point out examples of other young players he’s given a chance in the England squad:

I have taken chances by giving young players their opportunities and what they have done is taken it. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was there in 2012, Sterling was in our squad when he was only 18, 19. There are lots of players we can point to, Ross Barkley was another one.

An international cap for the Fletcher Moss graduate would be an incredible achievement, considering he was almost unheard of outside of the United camp prior to his debut in the 5-1 victory against Midtjylland.
