Louis van Gaal has all but confirmed that Bastian Schweinsteiger will be out for the rest of the season ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Everton.
The 31-year-old suffered a partial tear of a ligament in his right knee while training with Germany during the international break, which could also rule the midfielder out of Euro 2016 action with his country.
Speaking to MUTV before his pre-match press conference, Van Gaal provided no timeframe for Schweinsteiger’s return, but said that it was a big blow for United:
Schweinsteiger was injured already before the matches. I think on the second day of training. That’s a big blow for us and also for the national team.
You can never say anything about that [missing the rest of the season] because he’s started his rehabilitation. You have to wait and see. He has more or less the same injury as Wayne. We have to see how it heals.

The United manager also confirmed that Wayne Rooney is back in light training, with an appearance likely for the Under-21s before making a return to first-team action:
He’s doing great. He trained today at a lower level with the ball and will probably play an Under-21s match before he comes back.
Finally, Van Gaal provided updates on Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Ashley Young:
Luke Shaw is back on the training pitch on Monday with the physio. Ander Herrera and Ashley Young are coming back. Young and Adnan Januzaj played with the Reserves in a match on the Friday of the international break.
