Three Manchester United players have been named in Roy Hodgson’s 26-man provisional England squad for this summer’s European Championship tournament in France – with Michael Carrick missing out on a place on the plane.
The Three Lions’ all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney goes to the tournament as captain of his national side, and the ever-impressive Chris Smalling has also made the cut, entirely unsurprisingly, given that he has been one of the best centre-backs in the league this season.
In what could be seen as a surprise inclusion, Marcus Rashford has made the slightly larger squad and will now be hoping to convince Roy Hodgson in the training and warm-up games that he has what it takes to go to the tournament.

Injury-hit Phil Jones and Luke Shaw join Michael Carrick in missing out on the squad list for the Euros. Jones will see it as a huge missed opportunity, as he would likely have gone if fully fit; Shaw would have been a shoe-in too, but for his horror injury sustained in the Champions League near the start of the season. There were rumours that he may make the squad as a shock inclusion, but with Louis van Gaal already having confirmed that the left-back won’t play any part in next week’s FA Cup final, that seemed highly unlikely.
Rooney, Rashford and Smalling will team up with the Three Lions after Sunday’s cup final, and will face Australia and Portugal prior to this summer’s tournament – but will miss the warm-up game against Turkey due to their involvement in the FA Cup; the two games are on the same day.
Hodgson will cut the squad down from 26 players to 23 by the end of the month, as per UEFA’s deadline.
