Mourinho targets Fabinho

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is apparently eyeing up a deal for talented AS Monaco fullback Fabinho with the French side holding out for a deal worth over £20million.

According to The Telegraph, the Portuguese manager has identified the 22-year-old Brazilian as the preferred choice to sure up United’s defence as speculation continues to surround the future of certain players whilst Guillermo Varela is considering an offer from Eintracht Frankfurt.

United have struggled at right back in recent times as last summer’s signing Matteo Darmian has struggled for fitness as well as backup option Antonio Valencia while Varela struggled during his first team appearances under previous manager Louis Van Gaal that resulted in the club having an offer for Arsenal’s Mathieu Debuchy rejected in January.

Mourinho previously stated in his first press conference as Manchester United manager that there were four priority targets whilst any other signings would be optional and with the expected fourth target believed to be Paul Pogba then Fabinho’s arrival could be to support the departure of a current first team player.

And it was reported last week that United had placed both Tyler Blackett and Varela on the transfer list whilst Villareal have also shown interest in Argentine Marcos Rojo.

Mourinho has also placed his confidence in Jones as he has supposedly told the 24-year-old that he will be partnering Chris Smalling in the heart of United’s defence this season ahead of Daley Blind and with the return of Luke Shaw on Saturday in the side’s 2-0 win over Wigan on Saturday it looks as though Mourinho is close to moulding a solid core at the back ahead of stalwart David De Gea.
