Villarreal interested in United centre-back

Manchester United’s pre-season preparations are going well, with three signings having been made already by new boss Jose Mourinho.

The Red Devils are yet to make a sale yet however – and Villarreal are hoping to be the first club to wrap up a deal to take a player away from Old Trafford.

Having sold centre-back Eric Bailly to United earlier this summer, the Yellow Submarine are on the hunt for defensive reinforcements – and where better to look than United?

With Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and plenty of under-21s at the club, Mourinho could do with selling a centre-back… and according to Italian newspaper Gazzetta World, Villarreal are interested in signing Rojo.

The Argentinian international played at left-back for his country in the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil, and has made 53 appearances for the Red Devils in two seasons – but has failed to impress fans, or live up to the expectation with which he arrived at Old Trafford.

Gazzetta World report that United are keen to recapture most of the money they paid Sporting Lisbon for Rojo back in 2014, but may be open to loaning him out to Villarreal for a season, since he has three years left on his contract and a loan move would ease the club’s wage bill at least temporarily.
