Thanks for joining me on this live blog! Quite an evening we’ve had… Next up, Wayne Rooney’s testimonial!
FULL-TIME: Manchester United 5-2 Galatasaray
92′ – Lingard makes his first mistake of the game with a poor touch from a long ball. I think he can be forgiven!
89′ – Galatasaray are pushing for a third goal – but we all know it’ll make no difference if they get it.
86′ – Memphis beats three players with skill and passes to Mata. The Spaniard gives him it back and with a backheel on the turn, Memphis looks for the return again – but Mata is just offside.
84′ – Phil Jones steams into action and beats Unsal for pace – and the latter is called offside anyway.
Galatasaray have brought on Unsal and Sarioglu.
83′ – Memphis has switched over to the right-hand side, hoping to get a bit more luck there, having been hacked down to no avail on the left.
The last time Manchester United scored 5 goals in a game without the influence of young Marcus Rashford was against Bayer Leverkusen in 2013.
80′ – Mata shoved off the ball by Chedjou on the halfway line. The rest of this game will be a formality for United.
78′ – Twice now Memphis has been brought down by challenges that would certainly be bookable offences in a Premier League or European game, but the referee is yet to afford him a free-kick!
77′ – United are nearly in again as Rashford does six or seven stepovers then looks for a cross, but it’s cleared just in time.
GOOOOAAAALLLLL
Mata shows some beautiful footwork to roll the ball past two defenders. He finds Carrick with a reverse pass then runs into the box to get on the end of another reverse pass from the Englishman and score.
United 5-2 Galatasaray.
73′ – Memphis has brought his A-game tonight and his skill sets him away again but Muslera is there to parry.
72′ – Memphis dazzles the Galatasaray defence with some lovely skill and picks out Memphis with a backheel. He lays it off to Lingard but the youngster is closed down as he looks to strike at goal.
70′ – Rashford does well to win the ball from Gumus and United are enjoying some possession now.
Ashley Young is playing at left-back now, with Lingard right-mid, Mata left-mid.
United substitutions:
De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Blind, Shaw, Rooney OFF
Romero, Jones, Rojo, Darmian, Memphis, Mata ON
64′ – Galatasaray starting to find their feet again now after that explosive few minutes from United. Keeping possession as it stands.
United are absolutely rampant.
61′ – GOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL
Valencia stands up a wonderful cross for Fellaini at the far post and his looping header lands in the far corner!
4-2 to United!
GOOOOOAAAALLLLLL!
Rooney converts the spot-kick.
3-2 to United!
57′ – PENALTY!
Rashford’s pace bamboozles Galatasaray and Fernando Muslera brings down the young Englishman. Zlatan is on his feet applauding Marcus’ play.
GOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLL
United have started this second half well and they have their reward! Rashford plays a 1-2 to Antonio Valencia, whose cross from the byline is expertly finished by Rooney with a volley. Great stuff.
2-2.
54′ – Dzemaili hauls down Rooney on halfway and somehow escapes a booking. This ref really is an interesting one.
52′ – Bailly shows exceptional strength to hold off Gumus inside the United six yard box and win a free-kick. Cool as a cucumber.
This referee is as strict as they come – Young, Rooney and Fellaini all penalised for next to nothing inside about 90 seconds of each other now.
50′ – Yellow for Rooney after a late challenge on Selcuk
49′ – Young’s cross is cleared only as far as Rooney who slaloms his way around a few players with great grace and picks out an exquisite ball back to young. His early cross is claimed by Muslera.
48′ – Rashford holds the ball up well under the pressures of three Gala players. He finds Young who escorts the ball out for a United corner…
47′ – Muslera gets a good fist to the cross but the ball is back with United. Carrick and Valencia calm things down in midfield before a long ball makes its way towards Ashley Young, who is narrowly offside, if at all.
47′ – Shaw and Rooney link up with the former setting off down the left flank again and United win a corner.
Worth noting that Hamit Altintop is on for Galatasaray. He’s scored some pearlers in his time.
UNITED SUBSTITUTIONS:
Young, Lingard, Carrick, Rashford, Fellaini ON
Martial, Mkhitaryan, Schneiderlin, Ibrahimovic, Herrera OFF
The second half is underway.
Fellaini, Rashford and Lingard, amongst others, have been warming up.
We’ll be back with the second half and all the substitutions it will likely bring, very soon!
HT: United 1-2 Galatasaray
Goals from Gumus and Bruma cancel out Zlatan’s overhead kick in the 4th minute.
44′ – Shaw finds Rooney with an exquisite ball down the left but he’s short on the support and the move comes to nothing.
44′ – The corner is cleared but United now have the ball from a throw-in.
CLOSE!
Muslera plays his pass too short and Ibrahimovic is nearly in on an open goal but the ball is hammered away at the last second. Corner.
42′ – Bruma gives the ball away in his own half but pulls Rooney down as he moves to play Mkhitaryan in. No foul says the ref. That’s a contentious one.
42′ – Galatasaray are playing with a real swagger now, pinging the ball around as if nobody can touch them. Can United come back from behind?
40′ – GOAL
Bruma gets on the end of a one-two with Gumus and fires a shot into the inside side netting. Gorgeous.
1-2.
38′ – Herrera does well to get to a loose Galatasaray touch and pick Mkhitaryan out but his cross is just too low to evade Muslera
38′ – Mkhitaryan finds Rooney with an inswinging cross. The captain tees himself up and hits a dipping volley narrowly wide of the post. A good sighter for Wayne.
35′ – Zlatan turns Selcuk like a steering wheel and the latter brings him down on the halfway line. Ibrahimovic is then the target of a quick-free kick and is incorrectly called offside when through on goal.
32′ – An astoundingly good piece of play between Sneijder and Bruma carves the entire United side in half and the former bursts into the box. Bailly nudges him off the ball and there are claims for a penalty but the referee says no.
31′ – Yasin turns well to create space to run into but Shaw is there with a no-nonsense clearance to remove the danger.
30′ – The referee deems Ibrahimovic to have fouled Selcuk again on the halfway line. Gala go backwards with the free-kick though. Their game plan seems to be to keep the ball for as long as possible and score from set-pieces. United should prevail here.
28′ – This time Herrera takes the corner and he pings it towards the near post where Bailly darts across to attack it – it goes out for a goal kick though
27′ – The corner is headed down towards Ibrahimovic but it’s just behind him. It comes out again and the inswinging ball from Shaw earns another corner.
27′ – Martial picks the ball up on the left wing and takes two players on to get to the byline and put a cross in, which is cleared away for a corner.
25′ – Luke Shaw looks to play Martial in down the wing but it’s wildly astray. The pair need to work on their communication!
GOAL
Galatasaray equalise through Gumus as he nods in Sneijder’s free-kick unopposed.
1-1.
20′ – That free-kick leads to another just 10 yards further forward as Selcuk is brought down again, this time by Ibrahimovic
19′ – Herrera tries to drive a low cross in early but it’s intercepted. Galatasaray launch an attack of their own and it leads to a free-kick near the halfway line as Martial brings down Selcuk Inan.
17′ – Martial sends a defender to the shops and tees up Rooney, who thinks about blasting it from 20 yards but instead looks to play Herrera in. The through ball is toed away.
16′ – Dzemaili goes down dramatically under a challenge but the ref waves play on and rightly so – it’s not a non-contact game
14′ – Galatasaray really struggling to find a way to threaten United. Not much presence at all up top.
12′ – Herrera is doing well in midfield, showing good tenacity. Galatasaray defending in numbers when United are on the ball.
9′ – This is very comfortable for United so far. The bench are all smiles after Zlatan’s goal.
4′ – GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL
He started the move… AND HE FINISHED IT!
ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC scores on his United debut with an overhead kick!!
3′ – A fantastic Cruyff turn on the halfway line gets a huge cheer from the crowd and United move onto the attack…
2′ – Martial just asks a bit too much of Shaw with a heavy through ball, but it was the right idea.
1′ – A nice introductory spell for United, who kept the ball for 90 seconds after kick-off, with nearly every player getting a couple of touches.
KICK-OFF!
Ibrahimovic and Rooney get us underway
Here come the teams! Rooney and Selcuk lead their sides out, accompanied by the officials of course.
The teams are in the tunnel. This white third kit looks absolutely exceptional.
Just five minutes until kick-off now… or should we say #ZlatanTime?
It’ll certainly be good to see Mkhitaryan, Rooney and Martial playing behind the big Swede for the first time!
United will be wearing the newly-unveiled third kit this evening!
The bleached-hair duo of Marouane Fellaini and Phil Jones join a host of others on the bench, including Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford:
United bench: Johnstone, Romero, Darmian, Jones, Rojo, Carrick, Fellaini, Lingard, Mata, Young, Rashford. #MUFC
