Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United reign will officially start when his side faces Leicester City in Sunday’s Community Shield clash.
United are the most successful side in the history of the super-cup style game, having won the shield, which sees the previous season’s Premier League and FA Cup winners go head to head, 20 times, four of which were shared.
However, this is the first time the Reds are contesting the trophy as the reigning FA Cup winners in over a decade.
Indeed, United last played in the Community Shield as FA Cup holders in 2004 and have contested seven of the 12 matches in the competition since then – six times as reigning Premier League champions.
Leicester City, meanwhile, will be contesting the Shield for only the second time in their history after last season’s surprise Premier League title win. The Foxes won the competition back in 1971 in slightly fortuitous circumstances, as they were only invited to play in the match because reigning champions Arsenal were unable to fit the game into their schedule.
With all that in mind, let’s recall United’s last five outings at Wembley for the season’s traditional curtain-raiser.
