Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will not play in the Reds’ first Europa League group game against Feyenoord, with José Mourinho deciding to rotate his side with a busy September ahead.
Rooney, Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw are the main absentees from Mourinho’s 20-man squad, which flew out to the Netherlands on Wednesday afternoon. Valencia is also rested, with Shaw missing out after reportedly picking up a hamstring injury in the Manchester derby defeat on Saturday.

Jesse Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have also been omitted from the squad, having underperformed during United’s defeat on Saturday. Mkhitaryan had been carrying a thigh injury which he picked up on international duty with Armenia and the midfielder is expected to be out for ten days at most.
Mourinho had previously had that he would be rotating his squad and using his squad depth to the fullest, with United playing in Europe as well as the EFL Cup and he has stuck to his word, with the likes of Matteo Darmian, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Marcos Rojo and Memphis Depay in line for a place in the starting eleven on Thursday.
Marcus Rashford is also expected to start for United at De Kuip on Thursday night, with Mourinho impressed by the youngster’s second-half performance in the Manchester derby.
