Team News: Northampton Town vs Manchester United

Manchester United manager José Mourinho is expected to rotate his side once again for the Reds’ EFL Cup third round tie against League One highflyers Northampton Town.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the likes of David de Gea, Paul Pogba and Eric Bailly will be rested for Wednesday night’s trip to Sixfields, where United will be aiming to reverse their run of three straight defeats in all competitions.

They state that the trio will be rested after playing against Feyenoord in the Europa League on Thursday, as well as starting against Watford on Sunday afternoon. However, the paper believes that none of the under-23s will be called up to action on Wednesday due to the size of Mourinho’s squad.

Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial are also expected to be absent for the EFL Cup clash. Martial suffered a suspected concussion during the 3-1 defeat to Watford on Sunday, although he did sent a positive update to his condition on Twitter:

Twitter: Feel much better today. Thanks for all your support and your messages! https://t.co/e0eyV2BJBv (@AnthonyMartial)

Meanwhile, Shaw went in for a scan on Tuesday after being taken off with an injury in the same game and it has been confirmed that he has a minor groin tear. He will miss the game against Northampton, although he is still in contention to play against Leicester City at Saturday lunchtime.
