Manchester United’s record against Ukrainian opposition

Manchester United welcome Ukrainian opposition to Old Trafford for their first Europa League home game of the season, as Zorya Luhansk make the daunting trip to the Theatre of Dreams on Thursday.

A big name in Soviet football in the 1970s, Zorya have bounced back to the higher echelons of Ukrainian football after enduring some struggles after the disbanding of the Soviet Union, with the club finishing a record fourth in the past two seasons under the management of Yuriy Vernydub, while reaching the Europa League playoffs in back-to-back seasons.

However, they will face a tall order if they are to become the first Ukrainian club to beat United, with José Mourinho likely to field a strong side in an attempt to bounce back in Europe after defeat against Feyenoord on the opening matchday.

United have not lost home or away to Ukrainian sides in their past six encounters and have won all three of their previous fixtures against Zorya’s compatriots at Old Trafford without conceding a single goal.

But the Reds will have to wary of Zorya’s exploits away from home in Europe, having failed to score just once on the road and averaging a little over two goals a game on their travels on the continent.

Here’s a look back at United’s previous encounters against Ukrainian opposition ahead of Thursday’s clash:
