Team News: Manchester Derby (EFL Cup)

Manchester United manager José Mourinho will have a number of selection dilemmas when it comes to picking his side for the Manchester derby in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

Eric Bailly and Marouane Fellaini will both be unavailable for the United manager for the big clash at Old Trafford. Bailly has confirmed that he will be out for two months after suffering a knee ligament injury in the Reds’ 4-0 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday.

Either Daley Blind or Marcos Rojo will be expected to take Bailly’s place in the side, with Chris Smalling’s place in the team not in the question despite a torrid performance against the Blues at Stamford Bridge.

As for Fellaini, the Belgian has been ruled out with a knee injury after coming off at half-time during the same game. Moments before the break, he had taken a rough challenge from David Luiz, who went studs up into his knee, for which the Brazilian only received a yellow from referee Martin Atkinson.

There are also questions marks surrounding the fitness of captain Wayne Rooney and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Rooney did not make the squad for the game against Chelsea after picking up a muscle problem in the build-up to the encounter, while Mkhitaryan is still working his way back to full fitness after recovering from a groin problem he picked up in the first Manchester derby of the season in early September.
