Wayne Rooney is now Manchester United’s outright all-time top scorer, following his goal against Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.
The captain of his club and country stepped up to take a free-kick late into stoppage time at the bet365 Stadium – and instead of crossing it in, rifled it into the net for the equaliser.
It makes him the only player to reach 250 goals for Manchester United – with the great Sir Bobby Charlton ending his playing time at the club having scored 249 goals.
Having won every major honour with the Red Devils, Rooney was already sure to go down in United history, having scored all sorts of goals, from bicycle kicks to thunderous volleys – but his strike against Stoke may just be his favourite of the lot.
The man signed from Everton in 2004 made his mark right away, scoring a Champions League hat-trick on his United debut – one of those three goals being a direct free kick.
It is somewhat poetic that Rooney claimed the top-scorer title with another set-piece.
