A look ahead to a month of cup games

A look ahead to a month of cup games

Manchester United started February with a 0-0 draw versus Hull and a 3-0 victory over Leicester, kicking off what is a seven game month for United in unbeaten, but perhaps not the desired, fashion.

Just one of the remaining five games this month is in the Premier League, meaning United will play in every competition, including the Round of 32 in the Europa League and the EFL Cup final against Southampton. Here’s a look ahead to the busy schedule…

United will be looking to get revenge on Saturday’s opponents after the 3-1 defeat back in September. It is crucial that Mourinho’s men pick up all three points to keep the top four chase alive. Slip-ups from Liverpool or Arsenal could see United climb above either of the former and finally move away from sixth place. It is also a chance to extend the current Premier League unbeaten run to 16 games.

16th February – Saint-Etienne (Home, Europa League)

The Red Devils will finally be back in action in Europe against French side Saint-Etienne. United have only faced Saint-Etienne twice in history, winning once and drawing the other game. The home match is a big opportunity to put the tie to bed and give players a rest in the second leg with the EFL Cup final just four days later – a clean sheet would go a long way to achieving this.

18/19th February – Blackburn Rovers (Away, FA Cup)

FA Cup action is also returning in February with a fifth round tie against Blackburn. United advanced past Reading and Wigan in previous rounds, scoring four in both games. It’s a crucial game for Mourinho as he would like to still be competing for every trophy by the end of February.

22nd February – Saint-Etienne (Away, Europa League)

The away leg against Saint-Etienne falls just four days short of the EFL Cup final, meaning United may have to rest a few first team players, making it vital that a hefty lead from Old Trafford is brought with the squad to France.

26th February – Southampton (Wembley, EFL Cup Final)

The final game of the month for United will be a huge one, as they go head to head with Southampton in hunt for the EFL Cup. The game is a chance for Mourinho to collect his first trophy for the Red Devils, continuing his record of winning a trophy in his first season at every club. It’s crucial that United leave London with the trophy, which will give them confidence going into the last three months of the season.
