Team News: Saint-Etienne (H)

Manchester United will be without three first-team players when they host St Etienne in the last 32 of the Europa League.

Phil Jones, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney will all miss Thursday’s game after failing to recover from their respective injuries in time.

According to the United manager, the injuries to Rooney and Carrick are minor.

Mourinho said:

Phil is still recovering from the injury of the Hull match and Wayne and Carrick, I don’t want to say injuries because we are speaking about little muscular problems and protection of these problems.

The United boss will be buoyed by the return of Marcos Rojo, who trained on Wednesday for the first time since coming off injured against Leicester earlier this month.

The back four is likely to remain unchanged from the side who beat Watford at the weekend after Mourinho said:

I’m happy with my back four and I’m going to repeat Valencia, Bailly, Smalling and Daley Blind.

Anthony Martial will also be hoping his goal and assist on the weekend will be enough for him to keep his place for Thursday’s match.

It promises to be a special night for Paul Pogba and his family. He will come up against older brother Florentin Pogba, who is likely to line up against him for St Etienne.

The Europa League is an important competition for United this season, as it can be an alternative route into the Champions League if they miss out on the top four.

Mourinho is likely to field a strong side for this match however, he raised concerns about a possible fixture congestion if United continue to progress in four competitions.

Man Utd could have an extremely busy schedule heading into the final part of the season if they beat Blackburn this weekend in the fifth-round of the FA Cup and get past St Etienne in the Europa League.
