Claude Puel’s Southampton side are the men waiting for Manchester United at Wembley on Sunday – and they definitely deserve their place in the EFL Cup final.
Mourinho’s Red Devils overcame Northampton Town, Manchester City, West Ham United and Hull City to reach Sunday’s cup final – but Southampton had an arguably tougher route to Wembley.
So just how did the Saints go marching in to the EFL Cup final? They used 24 players in their five games on their way to Wembley, and didn’t name a single unchanged starting eleven.
They didn’t receive United’s luxury of a tie against a lower league side, either – facing two of the top four on their way to the final game of the competition, where they will await Jose Mourinho’s United with confidence in their ability to grab a cup win over a better-fancied side.
