Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is set to make a romantic return to boyhood club Everton in the summer, according to The Independent.
The Merseyside club are willing to meet Rooney’s reported £150,000-a-week demands, despite that figure being a considerable pay cut in contrast to his current deal at United. In return, United are reportedly willing to waive any transfer fee for the 30-year-old, due to his commitment to the club.
There had been rumours on Tuesday that West Ham United had joined the race to sign Rooney, but his first choice is to return to Goodison Park, where he left to join the Reds as an 18-year-old all the way back in the summer of 2004.

Rooney has fallen down the United pecking order in recent months, with José Mourinho often bringing him off the bench instead of playing him from the start. This had led to him losing his place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the friendly against Germany and the World Cup qualifier against Lithuania on Sunday.
Having become Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer in January, you could say that Rooney has accomplished all he can do with the Reds and that a move back to Everton would be the most logical step.
Everton manager Ronald Koeman has said recently that he would jump at the chance to bring the 30-year-old back to Merseyside and with both clubs seemingly happy for a deal to go through, only personal terms stand in the way now.
