Mourinho issues statement after Manchester attack

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has released a statement of solidarity with the city of Manchester following Monday night’s tragic attack which left 29 people dead and a further 59 injured.

The bomb attack at Manchester Arena following a pop concert last night has led to the cancellation of Manchester United’s usual pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday night’s Europa League final, as the sobering effects of such a devastating event show us once again that there are many things more important than football.

However, United do still have a huge European game to play in Sweden, despite the heartbreak in their own city. Jose Mourinho has released the following statement:

We are all very sad about the tragic events last night; we cannot take out of our minds and our hearts the victims and their families.

We have a job to do and we will fly to Sweden to do that job. It is a pity we cannot fly with the happiness that we always have before a big game.

I know, even during my short time here, that the people of Manchester will pull together as one.

The United squad trained at Carrington this morning and will fly to Stockholm this evening to prepare for their game against Ajax – where the Europa League trophy and a place in next season’s Champions League will be at stake.
