Manchester United may be one of the richest clubs in world football, but financial power does not always translate to the equivalent standards of success on the pitch.
Despite their vast wealth, Jose Mourinho’s United are still in need of a number of high quality new recruits this summer in order to narrow the gap between themselves and some of the best sides in Europe as they return to the Champions League.
Among those top quality teams on the continent are Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, but it’s surprising that the Red Devils only rarely foray into the German market when it comes to summer additions.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Shinji Kagawa have been the only arrivals at Old Trafford from Germany’s top flight in the last five years.
But, it’s clear that there is a huge amount of talent in the division, even beyond Bayern and Dortmund, and United could really exploit this market.
So if Ed Woodward had a free reign on transfers, who would be the best five players from the Bundesliga to improve United’s team? To make things a little more interesting, we’ve elected for no more than one player from each side.
