Four United players in Southgate’s England squad

Four Manchester United players have been named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Three Lions’ upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard have all made the cut as England vie for a place in next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

However, Ashley Young’s impressive performances at full-back have not been enough to earn him a recall, in the eyes of the Three Lions manager.

Luke Shaw’s absence from the squad is understandable though, as he’s only just made his return from injury, whilst Michael Carrick has retired from international football.

England will play Slovakia at Wembley before and away game in Lithuania three days later — they need just a point to qualify for the World Cup, so should have things wrapped up before that away game.

Elsewhere in the United squad, Red Devils’ top scorer Romelu Lukaku will be hoping to bag a few goals over the international break as he is just four goals behind Cristiano Ronaldo and two behind Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski in the race to be the top scorer in European qualifying; however he won’t necessarily be starting games as Belgium have already qualified for the tournament so there is no real urgency to play the big guns
