United looking to increase capacity at Old Trafford

Manchester United are reportedly looking into expanding the capacity at Old Trafford from 75,643 to to 88,000 — an addition of 15,000 seats.

The Daily Mail report that this wish to increase the stadium’s capacity comes off the back of the club’s decision to create a new section for disabled fans, which will see the current capacity drop to around 73,300 — therefore expansion would make sense so that nobody loses out.

Old Trafford is the biggest club stadium in the UK, with West Ham’s London Stadium the next closest at a capacity of 66,000; United’s ground is the third biggest of any in the UK, with only Twickenham and Wembley being bigger, at capacities of 82,000 and 90,000 respectively.

The largest football club stadiums in Europe are as follows:

  1. Camp Nou, Barcelona (99,354)
  2. Signal Iduna Park, Borussia Dortmund (81,359)
  3. Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid (81,044)
  4. San Siro, AC Milan & Internazionale (80,018)
  5. Old Trafford, Manchester United (75,643)
  6. Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich (75,000)
  7. Olympiastadion, Hertha Berlin (74,649)
  8. Stadio Olimpico, Lazio and Roma (72,698)
  9. Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex, Dynamo Kyiv (70,050)
  10. Olympic Stadium of Athens, AEK Athens, (69,618)

If United do go ahead with their expansion of Old Trafford to hold 88,000 people, it would become the second biggest club stadium in world football, second to only FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou, which sits atop the Catalan city. It would mean Old Trafford being the third biggest sports stadium in the world.
