Atletico Madrid centre-back Diego Godin has revealed why he chose to remain in Spain and reject a move to Manchester United, the Mirror reports.
Godin has insisted that he did not use Manchester United’s interest in signing him this summer as leverage in order to earn a new and improved contract with Atletico Madrid.
Jose Mourinho was keen on bringing Godin to Old Trafford this summer and had been preparing a bid for the Uruguayan international before the transfer window closed last week.
However, 32-year-old Godin turned down a move to the Red Devils in favour of remaining at Atletico.
Godin has now spoke out to deny claims that he used United’s interest in him to gain a new contract with Atletico.
I have not renewed. I have had offers, although I have decided to stay for personal reasons, and I am only thinking about the final.
But I have not extended my contract.
I saw that news come out, but I do not know where it came from.
