The Manchester United transfer rumour mill is about to heat up heading into the summer. Not only will the topic of a squad overhaul be up for discussion, but who will manage the Reds beyond this season is also being asked.
With the latter in mind, it broadens the horizons for the kind of players United will be targeting at the start of the 2026/27 season. The INEOS-led transfer strategies will be based on bringing in players who fit the club’s ethos more than those who complement the new manager’s style. Albeit, it will still be a considerable factor.
The ‘safe’ option at any point in speculation is a player with a known interest in playing for the Reds. Last summer, United enquired about Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba.
According to reports from BBC Sport, United have made a “tentative enquiry” via an intermediary for the Cameroonian. While the interest is genuine, the potential deal faces a familiar roadblock to last year. The Seagulls will likely command a fee around £100m for the 22 year-old.
Is Baleba worth it?
Baleba arrived at the American Express Stadium from Ligue 1 side Lille in 2023. He was brought in as a replacement for Moises Caicedo, who moved to Chelsea that summer.
The 22-year-old very quickly adapted to the Premier League, shooting up his valuation. Simultaneously, his progressive playing style identified him as an ideal midfielder for the INEOS cohort led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Especially last summer, United were looking to replace the ageing Casemiro, who was slowly winding down from his illustrious career. Little did the club or fans know that there was still fight left in the old dog.
The Brazilian, who will be leaving Old Trafford this summer, has an excellent return of reliability and goals from the anchor position. Playing under Michael Carrick has unlocked something in the player.
Ultimately, the load has been lessened to allow him to move elegantly and read the game well enough to contribute on both sides of the pitch.
Looking for Premier League-proven talent
Brighton are notoriously tough negotiators and a profit factory for some of the Premier League’s leading players today. Whilst United would be open to considering alternatives abroad, the formula of buying Premier League-proven players has worked for them.
For example, Bryan Mbuemo and Matheus Cunha have revolutionised the team’s attacking force this season, even in the darker days. The club’s new leadership has been vocal about ending the era of overpaying for talent.
Yet, there is a quiet acceptance within Old Trafford that landing a preferred elite midfielder like Baleba could push them into title contention in 2026/27. The risk-and-reward element is a factor that will be given great consideration.
In contrast, United could opt for multiple signings to plug the gap left by Casemiro. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is another name that has been linked to the club for a while. The Englishman would be considerably cheaper, even when taking the ‘United tax’ into account.
